This is our Steal 'O' Matic which is a visual, moving moodboard for our music video. We have included short clips from many different music videos:
Ellie Goulding- Goodness Gracious
Becky G- Cant Get Enough
Selena Gomez- I Want You to Know
Karen Harding-Say Something
Demi Lovato- Neon Lights
(These are all female pop artists of the same genre as ours)
It shows intentions of how we want our video to look, including, bright lights/colours, interesting shot ideas and location ideas. It is put to our song which helps give a stronger and accurate feel of what our video is going to be like.
Today we filmed some shots in Miya nightclub. We were very fortunate to get this opportunity as Sophie's Auntie owns it.
Below is a short video of the inside of the nightclub taken during our filming session. In in I am filming James and Frankie in front of the light-wall and Sophie is teaching Rebecca (a non-media student) how to use a camera so that she could film all three of us in a shot together. This clip also shows how the club is empty and that we had control of everything. You can tell from the audio in this clip that we also had control over the sound and lighting as Sophie was playing around with the DJ equipment.
These are the neon props (body paint and lipstick) we are going to use in the shots located in the nightclub. Here is some ideas we looked at on google for our neon face paint designs:
We discussed which colours would look best for each character and looked at inspiration of face paint designs. We then designed our own face paint plan for our own member of the band. Here are our designs:
Olivia: I am the diva/the sassy one in the band so we chose blue and purple because they are quite royal and regal colours.
Sophie:she is the girly band member so she is using bright pink which is a very feminine colour. Bright yellow is vibrant and a happy colour.
This is a photo we took in front of the UV light to show our neon make up
In order to film and have photoshoots we need to work out when we are all free and plan our time efficiently. This is a schedule for the month where we have planned when we are able to meet. We decided that Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days for filming in the club because it is not often used on these days and we can go in our free period and then run over into after school time. for photo shoots we can use our free periods at school because there is less equipment needed for this compared to filming. Filming scenes at school (in the drama studio) means we do not need to allow travelling time and arrangements because we are at school every weekday anyway.
Today looked into different logo ideas. We gained influence from girl bands M.O, Little Mix and Fifth Harmony:
Little mix is very 'pop' and girly and M.O looks the opposite- very plain and sophisticated. Fith Harmony is somewhere in between these, it uses a black background and a plain, bold font making them look sophisticated and mature. However, their name is in bright pink which implies they are also 'pop and girly. Our aim is to take inspiration from all of these logos and to portray the atmosphere we want.
Here are a few screenshots of different styles we liked the look of:

3.
Feedback:
We asked some people in our year what they thought of these three different ideas.
Max: no.3 feels like it isn't enough
Scott: no.3 is too plain and no.1 is 'too much'. I like the crisp outline of no.2 and it also looks casual but still professional.
Bessie: I like no.1 because it stands out as the glow attracts attention to it.
Jess:I like the pop of colour in the no.1 and no.2 but I prefer no.1
Connor: I like no.1 because it fits best with your theme- its girly, casually and pop.
Ellie: I like no.1 because it will attract attention (the glow stands out) when on an album cover so people will instantly know who it is. It also looks like an eclipse which is cool. no.3 without the heart looks too plain because the pink heart gives it a subtle pop of colour.
Peter Frasers Tips:
Pete Fraser came into school to talk to the media students about how to do well in this years exam. These were the tips he gave us:
Jake Wynne:
One of Pete Fraser's old media students also came to talk to us. Jake Wynne has worked in Commercials and Music Videos for many years. He was an editor for the Spice Girls video- 'Say you'll be there'.
He gave us some very useful tips about making music videos but also about his career and breaking into the media industry. He talked to each group and our ideas for our music video. Sophie, Frankie and I told him the idea for our video and he told us that we will need a lot of cuts in it but to not introduce too many quick cuts or effects from the starts as it needs to build up throughout the song. Robbie Williams Filming Task:
He created a fun task for us where we had to recreate the music video for the Robbie Williams song 'Let Me Entertain You'. We got into character by putting on similar make up to in the video and we took roles of one of the various camera men, guitarists, backing singers, drummers or Robbie. This was very fun as we could just let loose and have a good sing and dance in front of the cameras. I also enjoyed the filming because it made me very focused on keeping the camera steady and capturing essential parts of the performance.
He taught us to have multiple cameras rolling at the same time while performing the whole length of the song because this saves having an unnecessary amount of shots for the editor to sort through. It also allows for the editor to cut back and forward to different parts of the performance seamlessly which makes it look professional. We had a main camera, placed on a tripod in the centre which was focusing on 'Robbie'. There were cameras at the sides focusing on the backing singers, drummer and guitarists. Plus, there was someone operating a camera by sitting on a wheeled chair and having someone push them across the floor to get fast, swooping, panning shots. This was a great technique which we can use in our music videos.
We also had a go at editing all the footage we got from this task to create the music video but with multiple different performers.
We are very fortunate that one of our band members (Frankie) is a dancer and seeing as our video is very performance based, she has choreographed a short dance of the chorus which can be performed on the dance floor in the nightclub.
We had to research different 'pop girl band' poses so we could make ours look successful. Here is some inspiration we had for our first photoshoot:
Today we did our first photoshoot. It went really well and we got took over 700 photos! After putting them only the computer and selected the best ones, we realised it is worth taking a lot more than needed because even the best photo can sometimes be the one taken by accident or unplanned. It also allows for mistakes to be made. For example, someone could have their eyes closed or it could be blurry. We wore all black so we all had a similar style and also looked sassy and glamorous. We had to make sure we portraed our individual personalities within the band. I am the 'diva' so have to appear dominant and sassy. Sophie is the girly one so has to appear fun and happy. Frankie is the 'edgy' one so has to appear individual and sporty.
Below are a few of our photos. They have not yet been edited but seeing as we used the green painted room, we are going to change the backgound colour.
In this photo we have portrayed our personalities well. Sophie (right) is smiling and playing with her hair which makes her look happy, fun and girly. I have my had on my hip, I am in front of the others so closer to the camera and I am located central in the frame (these factors make me appear dominant and sassy). Frankie is leaning against the wall and has quite a 'sassy' look on her face. This is good because it shows she has a more of a relaxed attitude.
Born as Adam Spiegel, he was born Ocotober 22, 1969. He is an American director, producer, screenwriter and actor, whose work includes music videos, commercials, film and television. Jonze is well known for his music video collaborations with Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Björk and Kanye West.
1995- Björk
This is a performance video but also had a slight narrative running through it.
2011- Kanye West, Jay Z, Otis Redding
This is a performance video because it mostly consists of the artists 'performing' to the camera.
2015- Kanye West, Paul McCartney
This is more of an unusual music video which made me think it was a concept video. It has a slight performance element too.
Our ideas are expressed quite similarly in this music video by Ellie Goulding called 'Goodness Gracious'. There is a strong theme on bright lights and colours, which is also what we are going for.
I noticed a shot of a girl wearing neon lipstick in a dark place, which is what we are going to do. The shots where the main artist is dancing with neon strips on her shoes is also an idea we had of doing in our video. There is not a strong narrative, just a concept of young friends living life and having a great time which is what we were going to do too.
This video 'Lights' by Ellie Goulding has lots of varied shots using lights and a dark background so there is not narrative. We can get some shot inspiration for our video in our scenes using a lot of lights.
In this music video 'XO' by Beyonce I like the concept of happiness and having fun with friends (the fast pace of the video also helps to express this). I like the opening shot which is of blurred lights. I think it would work well to put a shot like this one in our video to break up the fast pace, make the visual more varied and therefore keeping the viewer interested.
I like this video because of its use of effects. in the first 30 seconds of the video, visually it is quite slow and there are no effects but in the middle and the end of the video there are lots of fast cuts, and lots of fast animations and other effects. The light colour changes also quicken. This is something we will be doing in our video .
I would like to use effects like these in our music video towards the middle/end to make it look more visually interesting and busy as the pace quickens. The idea of not putting everything in from the beginning was suggested to us by Jake Wynn the director, because otherwise it would be too full on and could become boring. whereas if the video gradually becomes more visually interesting then the viewer will be more hooked and less inclined to stop watching.
This shot was
These are screenshots from an A2 music video created last year. They created a solo pop artist. I like some of the effects and different shot ideas they had. There are hundereds of cuts in this video which makes it look interesting and professional.
Zara Larsson-
We like the shots where she is dancing and lip syncing in front of a white background and lots interesting and colourful effects have been used. We would like to achieve some scenes like this in our music video.
In the video by Neon Jungle called Trouble it introduces the band by shining
a moving spotlight over them individually. I like this idea and think we should use it in the beginning of our music video.
In the video 'How You Doin' by Little Mix there are split screen shots where there are close ups of all of the singers individually but put together in the same screen. We like this idea and want to do this in our video.
In this same video they had shot of them lipsncing individually but each with a different background which shows off their identity within the band. We are hoping to do this in our video.
We are taking inspiration from Little Mix's video 'Move' for our dancing shots where it is quite dark but with bring lights in the background so you get a silhouette effect. we think this looked impressive and professional.
In this video we liked the fast pace, quick cuts, use of lights. I noticed how the pace quickens towards the end of the video and I think this makes it successful. (This was also a piece of advice that Jake Wynn the music video director gave us). It is very fast but then ends on a longer shot which helps to end the video. I like how there are shots on top of other shots (e.g. blurred lights over the top).
