Lyrics

These are the lyrics to our song 'Light Me Up'. We have identified when there is a different band member singing by using a different colour font. Although in the band Parade, there are five members, and there are only three of us so we are going to have to share out the lyrics more but by doing this we have to make sure it is realistic and that the audience cannot tell that there is five voices rather than three. The lyrics which we can all sing (the choruses) are indicated in black font.

00:09   You gotta light me up
00:11   I’m not feelin’ A romantic boy
00:13   But if you think you’re worth it
00:15   Light me up up up
00:19   Light me up up up

00:22   Got my girls with me running

00:24   We’re running free
00:24   Lovin’ life and we don’t look back

00:28   Yeah there’s gotta be some chemistry

00:30   For a boy to steer me off this track, yeah

00:34   I see what you do

00:35   Clocked your every move
00:36   Think your deal is sealed
00:38   But you’ve got so much to prove
00:40   Need to take me higher
00:42   Maybe i won’t deny ya

00:43   But it’s gonna take more

00:45   oooh

00:46   You wanna get me close
00:49   oooh
00:50   In your fantasy

00:52   In the dark hoá¹—efully pursuing what you see

00:54   You gotta, you gotta

00:56   You gotta light me up

00:58   I’m not feelin’ A romantic boy
01:00   But if you think you’re worth it
01:02   Light me up
01:04   When you get my head t-turnin’
01:06   Boy you’re learnin’, learnin’ , learnin’
01:08   Light me up
01:10   You gotta smoke me like a cigarette
01:12   and keep me burnin’, burnin’
01:13   Light me up up up
01:16   Light me up up up

01:20   Yeah we’re coming through

01:22   I’m seein’ you
01:24   You make your move But i don’t want that

01:26   I said you need to take me higher

01:27   Maybe i won’t deny ya

01:29   But it’s gonna take more
01:32   oooh
You wanna get me close
oooh
In your fantasy
In the dark hopefully pursuing what you see

You gotta, you gotta
You gotta light me up
I’m not feelin’
A romantic boy
But if you think you’re worth it
Light me up
When you get my head t-turnin’
Boy you’re learnin’, learnin’ , learnin’
Light me up
You gotta smoke me like a cigarette
and keep me burnin’, burnin’
Light me up up up
Light me up up up

You gotta light me up

Li Li
You gotta light me up
Fair play
Not many tried harder
Sorry but you gotta wait a little longer
I ain’t saying that tonight it’s game over
‘Cos i told ya

You gotta light me up

I’m not feelin’
A romantic boy
But if you think you’re worth it
Light me up
When you get my head t-turnin’
Boy you’re learnin’, learnin’ , learnin’
Light me up
You gotta smoke me like a cigarette
and keep me burnin’, burnin’
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up
Light me up up up

Research

Our song
Parade's record label was 'Asylum Records' (2010-2011) which is an American record label founded in 1971 by David Geffen and Elliot Roberts.

Parade collaborated with a UK music producer called Tim Powell, who has also written and produced for 'Girls Aloud' and 'Sugarbabes', to create the song we are using ('Light Me Up') . This song was included in their second studio album which was created in 2012.

Our Genre
Our music genre is pop so we have looked at other pop girl bands in order to take inspiration of their, website, digipak and overall image.
Here are some we came up with:

  • Girls Aloud
  • Sugarbabes
  • Little Mix
  • Destinys Child
  • Fifth Harmony
  • M.O
  • The Pussycat Dolls
  • The Spice Girls

Inspiration: Theme and band style

This is a range of photos which show our inspiration for the theme of the music video. We are going with a bright lights and colours theme because the names of the song is 'Light Me Up' and this line is repeated many times in the song. This is an example of linking the visuals to the lyrics.

Below is a range of photos from different girl bands including, M.O, Fifth Harmony, G.R.L and girls aloud. These photos all express a similar style and this is what we want to go for. This style has to be suitable for our target audience so we have decided on clothes which are not too revealing but still look appropriate for a pop video and 'party-like'. In these photos the band member are wearing similar clothes to each other and this is something we are going to take into consideration.

PRODUCTION DIARY:

21/9/2015
Today we pitched a song each to our group with our ideas on how we thought our video could look. Unfortunatley the only song we came up with between was without a music video was this one:

This is quite an indie-rock band song so there is potential for a lot of performance and to make use of instruments like a drum kit and a guitar. However, after a lot of discussion we decided this song was not right for us. There is a very long introduction which will be hard to show visually and not making the viewer want to stop watching.
Therefore we spent the rest of the lesson looking for songs suitable and without a music video.

22/9/2015
Today we pitched two songs to the class and our ideas on how our video could look

We pitched two songs to the class: 'Mind over Matter' by PVRIS (Alex Mescudi & Scout Remix) and 'Light Me Up' by Parade

2/10/15
Today Pete Fraser and Jake Wynne came in to talk to us. Pete Fraser is the chief examiner of OCR A level Media Studies and he gave us top tips on how to get the best grade in our A2 media coursework which was very helpful. One of his students from many years ago, Jake Wynne, is now a music video director and editor. He told us about his experiences in the industry and how he got to where he is now which i found very interesting. He gave each group constructive criticism on our music video ideas and becuase ours is quite a fast paced song he told us to not put loads of effects and fast cuts in from the beginging and to make it more gradual. He aslo did a fun filming activity with us where we had to shoot an interpretation of Robbie Williams' 'Let Me Entertain You'. This allowed us to get a feel for what fiming music videos are like. We had five different cameras rolling at once and 15 people on set for each time we shot the video.

5/10/15
Today we spent last lesson and after school doing our first photoshoot, in front of a green screen. It went really well and we took around 700 photos! We dressed in all black but different style clothes in order to keep a theme going. Today we also created our twitter account, with the name @Sweet_Nothing_3

9/10/15
Today we filmed the first few shots for our music video. We wore a mix of black and denim clothing, but we all still looked different from each other so to carry on our individual personalities within the band. We took this outfit inspiration from one of M.O's outfits in their music video to the song 'Preach' which we really liked. We filmed all the shots in front of a green screen because for some shots in our music video we are going to use lots of After effects to make our video like edgy and impressive.

12/10/15
Today in the lesson, Frankie began to edit some of the shots we filmed from last Friday. Sophie carried on with the Steal-o-matic and I started to draw different shot ides on a storyboard.

13/10/15
Today we used the school drama studio for our second filming session. It went really well and we got lots of footage. We turned the main lights off and had two bright lights in front of the camera so we appear as silhouettes and also because we liked the glare from the lights which appeared on the camera. We used five different cameras which allowed us to get lots of footage from all different angles which we will find helpful whilst editing. Belwo is a photo of the drama  studio all set up ready for our filming (lights in the background, black backdrop, dark lighting and multiple tripods with cameras on). The second photo is a screenshot of a picture we uploaded to our instagram accound. It is a photo taken before filming, after we had put our costumes and make-up on.

This is the email which Frankie sent to the drama teacher in order to gain permission to use and film in the drama studio.

14/10/15
Today we looked over our footage and organised the shots into different folders so when we come to edit properly, everything is neat and can be found easily. We started to put a few shots together with the music.

16/10/15
Today we designed our face paint designs for in the club scenes which we are going to film next Tuesday.

19/10/15
Today we prepared everything for our filming session in the club tomorrow. We printed off a shot ideas list, reprinted the lyrics and wrote a list of things we need to bring/remember. We also discussed everything in our group meeting and worked out how many volunteers we had.

20/10/2015
Today was our main/important filming day. We gathered 4 tripods, 5 cameras, the face paint and our bags of costumes and drove to town in Frankie's car. We arrived at Miya Nightclub at 1 o'clock and the manager (Sophie's aunt) showed us how to work the coloured light walls, lasers and sound. first of all we got some shots in front of the light walls because we thought it looked very impressive. We then put our neon make up and dark clothing on and got a wide variety of shots taken in front of the UV light. We removed that make up and put on 'normal' make up' and also wore coloured outfits. Frankie wore red (edgy/sporty), I wore mint green and Sophie wore white (innocent). Some volunteers arrived but unfortunately not as many as we had hoped even though we are grateful to the people who did come and we did manage to get some good shots.

4/11/2015
Today we filmed outside in the dark with the theme of lights still being our focus. We used multicoloured glow-sticks, balloons and torches. With the help of some of our friends, we asked them to dance, have fun and be natural in front of the camera to portray youthfulness in our video.

5/11/2015
Today we filmed a short, casual interview which we are going to open our halfway presentation with. We got our friend Issy to sit beside thee camera and ask us a few questions. Today i continues editing our music video, Sophie continued on designing our website and Frankie started to put our halfway evaluation together.

6/11/2015
Today we presented our 'halfway evaluations' to the class which was filmed so we can get feedback from the other classes and teachers too. We spoke about our band and the members. We played our MTV interview and a preview for our music video. We also showed and talked through our website and digipak.

27/11/2015
Today we spent a lot of time editing. We go feedback from others and improved what we could and also filled the gaps we had. We managed to finished our first draft and handed it over to Miss Brookes so she can show it to the classes next week.

30/11/2015
Today we made the last few changes to the website for it to be ready to show the classes for the first draft feedback. We also spent time on the digipak- we discussed how we wanted it to look, drew a plan and started editing a panel each.

Music Video Timeline

3 Music Genres

Analyse the first 30 seconds of a performance, narrative and concept music video:

 Performance:

This is a performance becasue it contains the majority of sohts of the artist performing the song. This is quite a clear performance video becasue the artist is on a stange with a microphone and has an audience watching him. There are also close ups of the artist

Narrative:

This is a narrative video because it shows a story which has a beginning, middle and end. However it is also performance based because it shows the artist singing and dancing to her song. In this case the artist is the main part of the story but narrative videos can also involve characters who are separate to the actual artist/s.

If it was purely a narrative video there wouldn't be any performance but this isn't very common.

Concept:

Concept music videos are often quite unusual/abstract and can sometimes confuse the viewer but also keeps them interested. This video is in the form of an animated video game. This intrigues the specific target audience and also emphasises the technological advancements and practices that modern music videos are now accustomed to.

Representations of women

Pop Princess
The woman in this video (Taylor Swift) is represented as being innocent and respectable. This is because her audience is of the younger generation so has to be appropriate.

Diva

The women in this video are made to look powerful and sophisticated due to the camera angles and their costumes.
There are a few sexual dance moves but nothing too irrespectable towards women.
They are wearing dark coloured clothing which represents mystery and also sophistication. Their costumes include dresses, trousers, skirts and bras. whereas a 'gangsta hoe' would be wearing a lot less clothing

Gangsta Hoe

In this video Nikki Minaj is wearing very revealing outfits and 'stripper heels'.
There are times when the camera is moving up and down the girl's bodies and lingers on their bums whislt they are twerking which is objectifying them.

Banana phone

We were given a task to explore our camera and editing skills. We were given a lesson to film and a lesson to edit. We had to use the song 'banana phone' which is a quirky and fun tune. The different filming tasks we had to include were:

Stop animation- This is where we take a number of photos of a scene while moving the objects very slightly in each photo so once they are all put together and sped up it looks like the objects are actually moving.
Reverse shot- We filmed a shot of Sophie spinning round and throwing off her cardigan and on premiere we reversed the speed which makes it look interesting.
Depth of field- This is where something was in the foreground of the shot and someone walked up to the focus changes.
Split screen- This is where four different shots were filmed and then I edited them to all play on the screen at the same time.
Cloning shot- This is where the camera remains in exactly the same position (on a tripod) to film three different shots of the same person doing different actions in different areas within the shot (right, left and centre)
Tracking shot- This is where the subject you are filming is moving and the camera is moving with it.
Screen within screen- This is where the subject being filmed is also being filmed by a second camera behind the first.

Audience

Why and how do you consume music?

When? I do not find there are specific times of day I prefer to listen to music, just whenever I get bored, feel the room is too silent or fancy listening to a certain song.
Where? I like to listen to music in my bedroom while I am getting ready in the morning because I feel it gives me an energy boost.
Who with? My music is often an individual experience because I find it occupies me from being bored when I am alone.
How? I listen to the radio a lot because I have a digital one in my room. My favourite radio station in Capital Xtra because it plays the latest songs and mixes from the biggest Dance & Urban DJs. I also listen to the songs on my iPod, either through headphones or on my docking station.
Why?  The type of song can change someones mood. For example when listening to an upbeat song it can create a more uplifting atmosphere.

Prelim Task Evaluation

1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Lucy Harding, Sophie Frain and Bonnie Fitch to create our prelim task. We worked very well as a team and spread the workload evenly between us. Lucy created the storyboard, Sophie took control of the special effects, I did the rest of the editing and Bonnie sourced all of our groups props. I believe we worked well in a group as we all had similar ideas all had high levels of motivation and determination. We managed the task well
We also thought our appearances were quite similar to the members of Little Mix, whose video we were recreating which made it easy when choosing who should be who. For example, Sophie has dark hair similar to Jesy and Lucy has blonde hair similar to Perrie.

2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
We allocated different jobs for the four of us in our group. Lucy and I created a storyboard which broke the 30 seconds down into all of the different cuts. Underneath each screenshot on the storyboard we wrote the duration of the shot and a shot description e.g. a mid shot. Sophie and Bonnie took charge of the locations and the props e.g. the book at the beginning of the scene, Sophie bought from home.
During our group discussions we would use mind maps to brainstorm ideas. We had an in depth discussion on getting our outfits precise and we worked out what we owned that is similar but we also decided to  borrowed clothes from friends in order to make it look as similar as possible.
We spent a lesson discussing locations and then went to them around the school to weigh up if they would definitley be suitable and how we would lay out the props in each scene e.g. the bad in the bedroom scene. We also took photos in these locations so we could record them, compare and write about them after.

3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?
Star image- there are quite a few close ups and medium close ups of the band members which shows they are the main focus
Male gaze- the 'extras' are looking at the band members in awe

4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
We used a Sony HD Handycam video camera to film all of our shots and whilst filming we used an iPhone to play the song so we could sing along to the lyrics to make it easier for the editor. We used a  computer at all stages along the way, including the preparation, planning and editing.
Adobe premier CS6 is the software we used to edit our footage in order to get a similar outcome to the real video.
We used YouTube to source the song we used and to find special effects, like the moving flame which we imported into Premiere and overlayed on top of a shot. We found a tripod essential throughout filming as it allowed us to all being in the shot without needing an extra person to film us. It also ensures the frame is not shaky therefore making it look more professional.

5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
Being in a school made things quite difficult because there will always be people around which could potentially ruin a shot. Therefore for the scene where the band are more 'glamed up' we filmed after school so we could focus on getting it done rather than worrying when the bell would go, giving us limited time. We found that room availability was a slight problem because when we planned to film in the large drama studio we found that it was in use but we quickly solved this by finding the other smaller drama studio was free (our back up location) for a short time but we worked efficiently as a team and managed to get it all done in the time we had.
Camera storage was also a problem because when on location we came across a full storage so had to take our essential filming time deleting old videos off the camera. Also, the battery life on the Sony Handycam's isn't great so had to try a few different cameras before we found one with enough battery.
Our outifts were also something we took into account as we were focused on making them look as accurate and convincing as possible. We planned and gathered our outfits quickly and we thought they looked very similar.

6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?
In the first half of our video (the bedroom scene) we placed the camera on a tripod but it would have been looked professional if someone had filmed it for us because we were not able to get any moving shots.
With more time, better props and better planning we could have made the first scene in the 'bedroom' look a lot more similar to the real video. We could have payed more attention to detail as when the camera is sometimes supposed to be moving, we had it on a tripod because we had no one to film for us.

7) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?
The task has given me an essential insight into what goes into a music video, for example the amount of cuts. A lot of planning goes into making a music video therefore for our main production we need to be very thorough in planning every aspect.
It also helped with my editing skills because for our film opening 'Evangeline' we did not use many obvious effects but during this task we learnt how to import a video from YouTube (the sparkles or flame) and put them over shots in our video.

8) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
A film opening is a lot slower because there are a lot less cuts. A music video is an advert for the artist so needs to keep the audience interest for only a few minutes which is why producers need to fit a lot more in to keep the viewers interested and want to watch again and again. Whereas a film is a lot longer and the opening scene cannot give away too much of the film otherwise it could be thought of as trailer which is an advert (similar to a music video).

9) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member?
I think I am good at working in a team because I am good at communication and being able to lead. However i found i was not the best at all the complicated elements of editing on Adobe Premiere CS6 which is why Sophie and I worked in that together.

10) Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?
I liked the videos which were fast paced and had lots of cuts because this made them interesting to watch. However there was a slower one by the band 'East 17' where the group could focus more on the detail and the similarity to the original video.
